Have you ever experienced true ecstacy? The kind of eye-rolling transcendence depicted by Renaissance artists?
I think I did once, in the sixth grade. I was at a sleepaway camp where we randomly had a live band that would perform gospel-rock concerts in the evenings.
A blend of mild dehydration from going down the waterslide all day and the perfect chord change melted my brain. I truly felt like Heaven had descended upon that room of twelve year olds.
My physical form became pure golden light and I felt like I could easily float away. (Maybe this was all just the lack of fluids, but it felt real.)
That's as close as I've gotten to the feeling of ecstacy.
"Hero's Relief" is my best depiction of this transcendence.
So rare that we witness oneness. So often we feel completely alone.
I hope this painting reminds us to look a little bit closer for those moments of connection each day.
