One of my earliest memories is drawing mermaids and mermen with my best friend in the pews of our local church.
Though we were exremely young, we were genuinely obsessive in the way we would build our underwater worlds while the pastor droned on.
The magic (and strange attraction) to these fantasy creatures, specifically the hunky mermen, never left me.
Looking back now, I see these early drawings as me reaching for something words couldn't express.
Art has always been a portal. I love when I get to peek through the looking glass and see the fantasies that bubble up from somewhere else.
For me, The Merman is a motif that represents true childlike belief in other worlds.
